The More I See: The unholy feast

30/04/09  ||  HailandKill

Jagged riffs, melody, hooks, clean vocals that aren’t gay. It seems no one is really playing The More I See’s style these days. Then again, way back in May 2008 guitarist and mainman Giz Butt told Metal Hammer his band “want to make a difference in the metal scene.”

As if that solemn aspiration helped any. Today it seems The More I See’s sophomore effort barely made a difference in anyone’s life since it came out more than a year ago. Have you actually heard of this band? No? It’s okay bro-man.

The bottom line is “The Unholy Feast” is one helluva thrash metal album that successfully combines bits of In Flames, Testament, The Haunted, Megadeth, and a lot of other stuff between Gothenburg, Sweden and the San Francisco Bay Area. Got a clear picture of their sound yet? No? Sorry bro-man.

Flaunting their ambition right at the very start, opener “What Is Worse Than The Truth” is a mighty riff driven monster that sports a handful of guitar solos and Chad Sutherland’s refreshing vocal style: not too rough, clearly discernible, and full of vinegar, like he had just finished trying to purge a vile substance from his mouth by gargling something salty. But the real treasures inside the album is the twin-guitar magicry between Giz Butt and Gav King. On almost every song this bromantic pair churn out the riffs and bleed solos all over. If you’re into this kind of man-on-man gratification, it’s a delicious experience.

As for the rest of the album, “The Unholy Feast” proves a rock solid effort through and through. For starters, you have unpretentious thrashers such as “Ratcatcher”, “Forbidden”, and “Igniting the Flame” ready to burn your CD player. For variety’s sake even metalcore-ish anthems designed to please the Killswitch Engage set are included, which is the case with “Bloodline.” Epic pseudo power metal offerings aren’t left behind either with the stomping “The Unholy Feast” and “The Siege Is On.” Rounding out their repertoire, The More I See choose to dabble in nu-metal for album closer “Veiled By Greed”. On its less memorable moments, the band opt for a slower take with the redundant ballad-ish dirge that’s “Empty” then let old-school metal work its charms on “Fear of Death” and “Decadence Within.”

An hour-long exercise in fine musicianship; blessed with quality production from master producer Andy Sneap; sporting lyrics that aren’t too pretentious; “The Unholy Feast” is supposedly about vampires and the undead, but this isn’t very accurate. Who cares anyway? When metal sounds this good, all you should do is bang thyne head.

8.5 out of 10.
